Born in Mount Holly, New Jersey, son of Andrew Peterson and Martha Murkock. Early life and work experiences; religious fervor of the Methodists and Baptists; conversion to Mormonism and subsequent persecution by his former friends; introduction to John C. Bennett; personal experiences with Hyrum Smith; work in and near Nauvoo, Illinois until the completion of the temple; exodus west; arrival in Salt Lake Valley, 1849; settlement in Mountainville (Alpine), Utah; move to Weber Valley, Utah, 1855; member of the territorial legislature; removal to Fielding, Utah, 1878; removal to Mesa, Arizona, 1883; move to Corelites, Chihuahua, Mexico, 1885; return to Mesa.
